For the first time in its history, Aberdeen Asset Management has been promoted to the FTSE 100 Index. Following an announcement on Wednesday, 7 March by FTSE UK it was confirmed that the company has been included in the UK’s flagship index.
Martin Gilbert, chief executive and co-founder of Aberdeen Asset Management, comments: "Aberdeen Asset Management's elevation to the FTSE 100 is credit to the hard work of our people, our fundamental approach to investing and the support of our global client base.
"Today the Group is well placed given the strength and diversity of our products and client base. By remaining focused on delivering strong long-term performance and good service to our investors we will continue to develop and grow."
Founded in 1983, as Aberdeen Fund Managers Limited by Martin Gilbert, Ronnie Scott Brown and George Robb, the company was formed to take over the investment business of a local Aberdeen firm of solicitors, providing fund management and secretarial services to an investment trust (Aberdeen Trust PLC, a quoted investment trust with assets of over £100 million) and to a small number of institutions and private clients.
Over the past 29 years, Aberdeen has grown to become a global asset manager managing over £174 billion of assets (as at 31 December 2011) principally on behalf of leading national and corporate pension funds, central banks, financial institutions and retail investors from its 30 offices located around the world. It employs over 1,800 staff in 23 countries, including investment centres in the three main time zones through London, Edinburgh, Philadelphia, Singapore and Sydney.
