Scotland wins Home Internationals in some style

< Back to Scottish Ladies Golfing Association

The SLGA’s Scottish Ladies’ Golf Team, sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management for the first time in 2010, has broken a nineteen year duck to win the Home Internationals at Whitchurch (Cardiff) Golf Club.

Under the captaincy of past Curtis Cup player Lesley Nicolson, in an exciting finish on a rainy afternoon, Scotland beat early week favourites Ireland 5-4 in the title-decider.

Scotland led 2-1 after the morning foursomes and, in an afternoon that kept armchair fans on the edge of their seats following live scoring on www.lgu.org, the Scots prevailed, with Curtis Cup stalwart Pamela Pretswell sinking a telling putt to beat her GB&I team-mate Leona Maguire on the last hole.

The Scottish team of Laura Murray, Kelsey Macdonald’ Louise Kenney, Pamela Pretswell. Martine Pow, Jane Turner, Rachel Watton and Megan Briggs, supported by manager and former internationalist Hilary Wardell, proved to be a formidable unit, despatching holders Wales on the first day, England on the second, and paper favourites Ireland on the final day.

The contribution of national coach Kevin Craggs is immeasurable. The victory follows close on the heels of the Scottish Ladies’ Senior team winning the European Team Championship and, with the tails up, who would bet against the Scots following the success of their Eisenhower Trophy winning male counterparts in challenging for the World Team Championship (“Espirito Santo Trophy”) in Argentina next month?
